Spring has sprung (it's gonna be May) and now is the perfect time to think about all the new nail trends you want to try. If you have DIY nail art on the brain (and most of you now have the time), we have you covered with the top trends we're seeing everywhere for spring 2020. These tricks are do-able for every skill level, so even if you have shaky hands that deposit nail polish everywhere except on your nails, you can make this look good. We know this because we've been trying them out ourselves, and you can find some reviews from our team members sprinkled in below.

1. Cow Print

Moooo-ve over basic manis. This cow print mani by Bronte Mac puts all other nail designs out to pasture. To create this look, start with a smooth white base and then use a thin brush to create miss-matched splotches with black nail polish. You can also use a toothpick or a hair pin if you don't have a smaller brush. Since this mani isn't about perfection or precision, it's the perfect nail art trend to try if you're new to DIY nail art.

2. Abstract Art

Release your inner artist and turn your nails into a a canvas with this avant garde look—this manicure from Gel Nails by Coco can be your inspiration. This look requires you to dig deep into your nail polish stash and get creative using colors you haven't used in a long time. Abstract art manis may seem intimidating at first, but since it is abstract, if you mess up you can just pretend it was intensional.

3. Negative Space

Negative space is everywhere this spring. Try out this trend by replicating this minimalist stripe design by Amy Le. Start by making a stencil for your stripe by applying nail tape or any other tape to your nail. Press it onto the nail firmly for a tight seal. Then paint over the stencil you made with a bright nail polish color of your choice. Remove the tape before it dries to prevent the tape from lifting the nail polish off the nail. Once it's dry clean up any mistakes with a q-tip soaked in nail polish remover and apply a top coat to add shine to your natural nail.

4. Chrome

Turn your nails into shiny little beetles with chrome nail polish. Our resident DIY mani expert, Sable Yong, created this light reflecting look using a chrome nail kit she found on Amazon. You can read exactly how she achieved this shiny manicure in a Beauty Blueprint article she wrote here. Hint: The pigment is powder.

5. Watercolor

Fun fact: watercolor art dates back to the Stone Age when cavemen drew on walls using natural pigments and, of course, water. Add a bit of ancient history to your nail with this watercolor design. If you have loose pigment, you can follow The Daily Nail tutorial on Instagram or you can fake it by starting with a clear base coat. While the base is still dry, add a few drops of each color about halfway down the nail. Before it dries, use your top coat to swipe the colors toward the tip of the nail.

6. Simple Squiggles

This look by Hard As Nails Studio is totally retro. It's a nod to the '70s, and since that era's fashion is back and here to stay, this is the perfect mani to go with your bell bottom jeans and your statement sleeve tops. To create this look you'll need three or more nail polishes of your choice, preferably different hues of the same color to stay true to the 1970s print, and a small brush. Again, toothpicks and other similar tools would work fine. Simply draw on squiggles and then follow the line with your other colors and finish with a top coat.

7. Neon French Tips

French manicures have been around for decades, which means this classic style is getting stale and it's due for an update. What better way to refresh a dull look than to do it in bold colors. Follow in Victoria Xenia Quitzau's footsteps by painting the tips of your nails in electrifying neons. Simply apply a thin line any any bright color of your choosing, clean up mistakes with a cotton swab, and top it off it with a shiny top coat.

9. Mismatch Pastel

In 2020, we don't care if our nails match. We're painting them all different colors. We aren't going crazy though. They still have to color coordinate like Yes What Nails' pretty pastel mani. This nail design looks great with a glossy top coat or a nice matte finish and it adds easy color to your everyday look.

10. Pretty Polka Dots

Polka dot it with this pretty mani by Essie Y'all. Uniform polka dots are a classic, but the varying sizes of dots in this spotted mani help modernize the print. Paint on circles using a small brush or use the back of a brush and a q-tip to stamp on perfect dots before sealing your manicure with a top coat.

11. Cuticle Polish

French manicures aren't for everyone, but this cuticle polish design by Hang Nguyen is essentially the opposite of a French manicure. Instead of white polish, it's five different colors, and it's an asymmetrical line at the base to switch things up. To get this look use a thin brush to sweep bright nail polish along the cuticle line. Clean up any mistakes with a clean brush or q-tip soaked in nail polish remover. After the polish is dry, apply a top coat to shine and seal your manicure.

12. Dainty Daisies

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. But cute nonetheless! To create this dainty little daisies mani by Holly Falcone, just dip the back of a makeup brush (or anything else with a round tip) into a nail polish color of your choice and then use another round tip to add circular petals around that first dot. You can go with the classic white daisy or alternate colors for a rainbow bouquet. If you want to level up and get a little more complex, you can also add a few little leaves around the petals with green nail polish.

13. Pop Art

This nail art really packs a punch. If you love comic books or Andy Warhol, this manicure by Jessica Washick will inspire you to create your own pop art nails. The key to this look is strategic line placement with a thin nail polish brush. Start by lining the outer edge of your nails and then add a few extra lines to on one side of the nail to give the illusion of light reflecting off the nail.

14. Stripes

Stripes will forever be in style. To recreate this look by Hang Nguyen, all you need is nail polish colors of your choice and nail tape or a brush and nail polish remover to clean up the edges. You can do random color combinations as seen below or if you really want to jazz up your nails, try doing branded stripes like Gucci's signature green and red stripes or Tommy Hilfiger's red, white, and blue logo.

15. Stick-On Mani

When all else fails, just buy a stick-on manicure set from brands like Color Street and ManiMe. The application for these is super simple. Just peel, stick, and file away the excess. The best part is that there is no dry time for these nail polish strips and you can get top dollar nail designs for the price of a nice dinner.
