What makes a mascara not just good, but the best? Is it the formula? Or the brush? Obviously the best mascara has to be non-clumping and smudge-proof. But what is more important, volume or length? And do the best mascaras make your eyelashes look natural or dramatic?
There are many criteria mascaras must fulfill in order to be considered the best and there are a seemingly infinite number of mascaras on the market, so it can be kind of overwhelming trying to find the perfect one for your eyelash needs. Luckily, our Supergreat community has reviewed dozens, maybe even hundreds, of mascaras and we’ve compiled a list of the top 20 on the app to help you wade through the black sea of volumizing and lengthening formulas.
1. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
Things that are better than sex: chocolate, rewards, jeans that fit your waist AND your thighs, and Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara. Our community loves the hourglass-shaped wand that mimics the curves of a woman’s body and adds voluptuous volume to every lash. This $25 buildable black mascara promises to be smudge-proof for all-day wear. Add one coat for full and defined lashes or three coats for your most dramatic lashes ever.

2. Glossier Lash Slick
Glossier calls this mascara “extensions without the extensions.” The Lash Slick formula contains very small fibers to add length to lashes without extreme volume or clumping so lashes look natural and feathery. Keeping with Glossier’s no-makeup makeup look, this is the perfect $16 mascara to wear every day. It's also water-resistant but not waterproof so it is smudge-proof but still easy to take off at the end of the day.

3. Pacifica Highest Lash Chronic Volume Mascara
Get high…lashes, that is, with Pacifica’s Highest Lash Chronic Volume Mascara. The formula is infused with hemp-derived cannabis sativa oil for ultra-black drama and hemp fibers for extra length and lift. Even the vegan bristle brush has a twist (literally) to help separate lashes and add volume. If you want lashes that reach for the sky, this $14 mascara will give them a boost.

4. Milk Makeup Kush High Volume Mascara
We have a strong cannabis theme going on right now. Take a hit of Milk Makeup’s Kush High Volume Mascara. The plant-derived oil in this $24 mascara fuses heart-shaped fibers to each lash. What are heart-shaped fibers, you ask? We can only assume that means the fibers are curled like half of a heart to add extra volume, length, and curl to each lash. That also means this the perfect mascara if you have stick-straight lashes.

5. L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara
We're all dreaming of a vacation right now (or just normal life would be fine), so throw on a few coats of L’Oreal’s Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. The 200+ bristles on the brush will fan out and coat your lashes until your lashes are like mini visors over your eyes, protecting them from the sun. Many of our Supergreater’s who love this $11 mascara say it is a dupe of Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara. Can someone do a side-by-side test to confirm?

6. Maybelline Lash Sensational Volumizing Mascara
No matter your lash type (straight, blonde, short, unruly, etc.) make them sensational with Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Volumizing Mascara. The spoolie brush on this $10 mascara contains ten layers of bristles (that’s a dollar per layer!) to fan out lashes and give them a 360-degree coat of this blackest black formula. 7. Maybelline Snapscara Mascara in Pitch Black
The color is important to note here because Maybelline’s Snapscara Mascara also comes in some unique shades like Ultra Violet, Black Cherry, and Deja Blue, but our Supergreat community still prefers the classic black lash look. Color isn’t the only thing that makes this $8 mascara different. It's Maybelline’s first wax-free mascara so it's a snap to remove at the end of the day. Just splash with warm water and gently massage. No need for tugging or makeup remover!

8. Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara
Have you ever wished there was a mini curling iron that would curl your lashes? Well, that doesn’t exist for obvious eye-burning reasons, but Benefit Cosmetics’ Roller Lash Mascara is the next best thing. The hook ‘n roll brush grabs, separates, lifts, and curls all in one stroke, while the curve setting formula holds lashes for up to 12 hours. This $25 mascara also contains lash conditioning ingredients provitamin B5 and serin for soft, healthy lashes.

9. Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Natural Mascara
Tarte calls this mascara “a pushup bra for your lashes” and our Supergreaters can definitely see why. This $23 mascara provides lift and volume so lashes look perkier and bigger than they really are. 10. Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG Mascara
Don’t get it confused—BADgal Mascara is not the name of Rihanna’s new Fenty Beauty mascara, even if her Instagram handle is @badgalriri. This is Benefit Cosmetics bigger, badder volumizing mascara designed to last up to 36 hours, because sometimes bad girls don’t wash their face at the end of the night (that’s how you know they’re bad). The Slimpact! brush is made with short bristles, making it easier for you to coat your lashes from root to tip so you can go out with bangin’ eyelashes.

11. Queendom Unlashed Mascara
If the queen of England asked us for a mascara recommendation, we might suggest Queendom’s Unlashed Mascara. Like Milk Makeup’s Kush Mascara, this $18 tube contains heart shaped fibers to add length and curl to every lash. Plus, the wand contains a different bristle density halfway around so you can choose how together or separated you want your lashes to be. Apply this mascara whenever you want to “unlash” your inner queen and rule the world.

12. Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara
This is exactly the same as the mascara that won first place, the only difference is that it’s the waterproof version. Our guess is that our community prefers washability over cry-proof and sweat-proof formulas. We can’t blame them, tugging and pulling on your lashes to remove waterproof mascara is tiring, but sometimes a waterproof mascara is necessary, like when it’s raining or snowing or you want to emphasize your lashes by the pool.
